Sweeter Than Honey Bee Propolis

Bees collect resin from trees, and combine with wax and pollen to create bee propolis.

Aretha famously sang, “Ooo your kisses, sweeter than honey.” While the sticky-sweet concoction is often used to bring sugary memories to mind, and we have all the Respect in the world for Ms. Franklin, there is another bee-produced substance that may be even sweeter in health benefits.

Bee propolis is a sticky substance bees make by collecting a resinous substance from trees, combining it with wax and bee pollen to use as a sort of mortar for holding the hive together. Propolis serves an important function in the hive, preventing entrance of predators, bacteria, and disease; however, it is the extensive health benefits of this compound that have put propolis in the spotlight recently.

BENEFITS OF PROPOLIS:

  • Improves immune system – Stimulates formation of antibodies to build body resistance to many diseases. Helps body release substances to combat cell deterioration. Improved physical, intellectual, and sexual performance.
  • Treats burns- Reduces inflammation and helps skin heal faster than a normally prescribed cream.
  • Increases fertility- Various studies have shown increased pregnancy rates in women given propolis vs. women who were not.
  • Potential cancer drug – Studies on propolis and prevention of colon cancer and other cancers are continuing. Anti-tumor growth agent.
  • Remedy for bowel problems
  • Dental care -Used in dental surgery as a safe, natural disinfectant. Anti-plaque agent.
  • Protects liver – Propolis was effective in protecting liver from alcohol in several studies.
  • Improve antibiotic effectiveness – Has been shown to increase the effectiveness of penicillin and other antibiotics from 10 to 100 fold.

Propolis has been found to contain over 500 more flavanoids (antioxidants) than oranges. It’s anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory properties make propolis a must-have item in anyone’s diet. It is available in supplement (capsules), liquid (extract), and cream forms. Keep a supply of propolis on hand, as it is especially useful to carry with you while traveling.

Note: Those allergic to bee pollen, honey, conifer or poplar trees, it is not recommended that you use this product. Pregnant or nursing women should not use propolis as there is not enough information in this area. If you have asthma or an allergy to bee stings, use extreme caution in using any bee products.
